The brand is called Alpinetek. Have u ever heard about it? Is it good? Costs something like $120

Check the insulation they put in it. If the specs are non-existent; then it is cheap quality. On the other hand if your jacket is a good windbreaker and especially at the waist, cuffs and neck, all you need is to find is good clothes in layers to put underneath; the result is the same. I bought a very thin light jacket this year with a great hood by Columbia and my wife got a better one on sale at SAIL in Montreal (there is one in Toronto). The idea is to wear a very high end bit of underwear and technical clothing and you will not freeze. Layers is where its at if you dont want a cumbersome and heavy jacket all winter long in the city. Thermal underwear is very thin and extremely warm nowadays and you would wear longjohns if you are going to be walking outside for any length of time, because if you are only hopping to get on a bus or subway you will toast, its not worth it.

Never understood the hype. Almost everyone I know has one and everyone walking down the street has one. Just like iPhones.

I just bout me a nice Tommy Hilfiger down jacket for $170. Thick, warm and looks really nice. I like that it doesn't look like the Canada Goose jackets everyone is wearing the past 5-6 years, and of course is much cheaper.

Canada Goose jacket, cleaning question.?

It has to be dry cleaned, no problem. But it has the no machine dry symbol on the care label and no other dry symbol. It also has the fur around the hood which isn't detatchable. Does anyone have any suggestions as how it should be dried? I'd hate it to get ruined. Thanks.

Best Answer:  Take it to your dry cleaner. They should know how to clean it. If they don't, try another. I'm guessing it's synthetic fur, so there shouldn't be a problem. Personally, I never take down to the cleaners. I wash and dry all of mine at home, except my duvets. Those I wash and dry in the HUGE front loaders at the laundromat.

If this has to be dry cleaned the fur would have to come off the jacket especially if it is real fur. Make sure you take it to a reputable cleaner that knows what they are doing. The chemicals in dry cleaning could damage the skin on the fur and cause it to rot. Mostly these fur pieces are sewen on by hand or by one seam. If you have a friend who is a good sewer have them look at it first maybe they can remove the fur and you can wash the jacket yourself which would save a lot of money. To clean the fur part put it in a bag with corn starch and shake, blow it out with the vacuum hose stuck at the other end of the vacuum, then steam slightly with a boiling kettle. Be sure not to put the fur too close. It should come out looking silky and shiny again just like your hair after you wash it.

  • If the fur around the collar is real, you need to take it to a fur cleaner, not a dry cleaner. Your dry cleaner may know of a fur cleaner, so ask them. (Dry cleaning removes oils, why would you dry clean any down type items as they have oils in them. Remove the oils and the feathers become brittle and poke through the garment.) Except for the collar, I would wash on gentle and dry outside.

Use a large washer. Use warm water and any detergent. Dry in a dryer on perm. press until BONE dry. Could take over an hour. Dry with a pair of clean sneakers to break up the down clumps. NEVER dry clean it. (They don't. You pay to have them wash it the way I described)
